What counts as a water heater emergency?

Some problems can wait for a weekday appointment. Others can't. These need a call right away:

  • Active leaking from the tank, especially if water is reaching finished floors or electrical equipment
  • No hot water at all in a home with babies, elderly residents or anyone with medical needs
  • The relief valve is discharging repeatedly or the tank feels dangerously hot
  • A gas smell near a gas or propane heater
  • Scorch marks, soot or melted parts around the burner or vent

If you smell gas: don't flip switches or light anything. Leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Once the utility has made it safe, a water heater pro can repair the appliance.

What to do while you wait

  1. Shut off the cold water supply to the heater. The valve is on the cold inlet pipe at the top of the tank.
  2. Turn off the energy source. For electric, switch off the breaker. For gas, turn the control knob to "off" or "pilot".
  3. Protect the area. Move belongings away and use towels or a wet vac. If the tank is leaking badly, you can attach a garden hose to the drain valve and run it to a floor drain or outside.
  4. Don't touch the relief valve if it's discharging hot water. Keep clear and tell the pro when you call.

Common causes of a sudden loss of hot water

Most emergency calls trace back to a handful of failures. On gas units it's often a pilot that won't stay lit because of a worn thermocouple or flame sensor, or a failed gas control valve. Our page on gas water heater repair covers these in detail. On electric units, a burned-out element or a tripped high-limit switch is the usual suspect; see electric water heater repair. Tankless units tend to fail with an error code, often from scale or ignition faults, covered on our tankless repair page.

In Connecticut, emergencies tend to cluster in winter. Incoming water is much colder, so the heater runs longer and harder, and a weak part is more likely to give out. Homes that heat with oil and get hot water from the boiler can lose both heat and hot water at once; see indirect and oil-fired water heaters.

What happens when you call

Our line connects you with independent local water heater and plumbing providers who serve your area. Tell them your town, the fuel type and what's happening. They'll let you know when they can get there and what the service call involves. Availability varies by provider, time of day and location, so the sooner you call, the better your options.

Emergency service is just one part of what we help with. For everything from routine fixes to full replacements, see our main page on Connecticut water heater repair.

Emergency help across the state

We take calls from all over Connecticut, including the cities where after-hours demand is highest: Hartford, New Haven, Stamford, Waterbury and Norwalk. Smaller towns are covered too, though travel time can be longer in the rural northeast and northwest corners.

If the tank turns out to be past saving, the same pro can usually quote a water heater replacement on the spot.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get same-day water heater repair in Connecticut?

Often, yes. Many local providers offer same-day service, but availability depends on your town, the time you call and how busy they are. Calling early in the day gives you the most options.

Is a leaking water heater an emergency?

A small drip from a fitting can usually wait a short while, but water coming from the tank itself, or any leak near electrical equipment or finished floors, should be handled right away. Shut off the cold supply and the power or gas, then call.

Is it safe to use a water heater that won't stay lit?

Leave it off until it's checked. A pilot that keeps going out usually points to a failing thermocouple, flame sensor or gas valve, or a venting problem. All of these should be diagnosed by a pro.

Why does my water heater seem to fail in winter?

In winter, incoming water in Connecticut is much colder, so the heater runs longer to reach temperature. That extra load exposes weak elements, thermostats and burner parts.
